Appointed for a scope of works within the Berkeley Homes Heritage Quarter of Royal Arsenal Riverside, Soundcraft combines cutting-edge fabrication with specialist installation for this notable site.

As Soundcraft continues to heighten its impressive portfolio across the UK capital, completion of Royal Arsenal Riverside showcases the company’s manufacturing precision, product strength and installation expertise.

Located on the River Thames in Woolwich, Royal Arsenal Riverside is made up of five character areas encompassing a mix of new-build residential, retail and commercial elements alongside the sympathetic refurbishment of listed buildings. Soundcraft was commissioned specifically for Building 10 – historically known as the Royal Carriage Factory and one of the oldest parts of the current building to survive from an original workshop built between 1802 and 1805.

Work by Soundcraft specialists incorporated the fabrication and installation of Senior Architectural Systems SF52 curtain walling and thermally efficient PURe Commercial Doors and Windows to sectors of the existing building, together with Soundcraft’s own pioneering Aluminium Integrity Door Range for residential areas.

Building 10 is now described as ‘a stunning expression of 21st Century architecture’.  As the design-led residential centrepiece of Royal Arsenal Riverside, it combines 10 storeys of 112 apartments overlooking Windsor Square with an expansive piazza and colonnade of shops, restaurants and cafés.

Soundcraft’s Senior Estimator Steven Maslin talks about the project constructed to work in harmony with Grade II listed buildings for this prestigious development: “The building had undergone a number of internal alterations, while externally the elevations remain largely original, a full height extension with basement was added in Victorian times, and a single storey extension added to the east elevation.

“We successfully established curtain wall areas spanning floor levels to create a large fully glazed ground floor to mezzanine expanse that would encase a walkway through the building with commercial properties on either side.

“Key to design concepts included our external façade curtain wall screens, many featuring large, curved head sections to maintain the existing architecture and complement the building’s strong industrial heritage.”

The stunning transformation of this former brownfield site, which was once home to some of the largest munition factories in the UK, saw Soundcraft working closely with Senior Architectural Services, commenting: “The high profile project designed by architects Corstorphine & Wright for Berkeley Homes is one of the latest London based contracts to be undertaken in collaboration with our supply chain partner Soundcraft.”

Soundcraft’s Steven Maslin concludes: “Our teams have achieved amazing results in the completion of this historic project and we are immensely proud to be part of the Royal Arsenal heritage”.
