When it comes to doors designed for security, particularly communal security doors, a Secured by Design (SBD) accreditation is instantly recognisable – and the marketplace generally wants SBD-standard doors made from steel or aluminium.

There are plenty of projects, however, where a door with SBD accreditation, or a metal door, is not required. In this post, we’ll look at the features of the timber products in our Portcullis range and how they help achieve high standards of security.

Proven, long-term performance
Factory-finished timber Portcullis doors and screens have provided solutions for the social housing sector for thirty years. Designed in CAD software and manufactured using automated CNC machinery, the range has been developed for reliable security, with the minimum of maintenance.

All doors, screens and frames are made from Sapele. From the mahogany family, Sapele is a hardwood with excellent stability, durability and strength. The manufacturing process concludes with sanding, then finishing with a mahogany-colour Sikkens exterior finishing system, classified as ‘stable’ to EN 927.

Using timber is more environmentally friendly than manufacturing in steel or aluminium, and FSC-certified hardwood gives specifiers added reassurance that a project’s sustainability requirements will be met.

A range of glazing options is available including laminated glass, and polycarbonate.

High-quality, heavy-duty ironmongery
The hardware represents a potential weak spot in any door, so Portcullis doors are fitted with ironmongery designed to provide appropriate levels of security.

Stainless steel is used for the full-length continuous hinge and T-bar, as well as the solid, bolt-through round bar pull handle that features a stainless steel push plate to conceal the handle’s fixings. The kick plate is also stainless steel and covers the door’s bottom rail for additional protection. Security screws retain all of the ironmongery, while frame fixings or overt fixings are concealed with pellets to make them less of a target.

Door closers by LCN, and either Securitron Magnalocks or Assa locks and electric strikes, are well-respected products that can be supplied as required. Access control equipment, like automatic door openers, can also be accommodated.

Communal security door maintenance
Of course, Soundcraft provide all of the necessary maintenance instructions and recommendations to make sure that doors perform throughout their service life. Planned maintenance should minimise the chance of faults occurring, especially with closers, locks and hinges.

Many of the features outlined above are shared with other doors in Soundcraft’s range, both SBD-rated and non-SBD.
