BS 8300 is the code of practice that helps disabled people make the most of their surroundings through architectural design in the built environment.

It looks at the provision of aids and the use of features such as ramps, guard rails and signs. The code is officially known as BS 8300: 2009+A1: 2010 (Design of buildings and their approaches to meet the needs of disabled people – Code of practice).

Approved Document M (ADM) of the Building Regulations (Access to and use of buildings) provides guidance which is based on and complementary to BS 8300. But, it is incorrect to assume compliance with Part M or BS 8300 alone will meet the requirements of the Equality Act. Also, it should be noted that the requirements of Part M and BS 8300 are ‘minimum standards’.
