Trumpington College

Project Type

Trumpington Community College will be Cambridge’s first new Secondary School for 40 years and will be opening its doors in September 2016.

The clients, City Of Cambridge Education Foundation, Cambridge City Council & Cambridge County Council, wanted to create an unconventional building reflecting their educational ethos.

Avanti Architects developed the design around Danish school models reflecting the visionary idea of the client, allowing for unconventional teaching and social interaction to meld together. The principal feature was organising the main building as two L shaped arms around a central atrium.

The aluminium element was used to differentiate it from adjacent residential buildings made entirely of bricks.

Main Contractor

Morgan Sindall

Work Done

Soundcraft’s contract consisted of the manufacture and installation of aluminium curtain wall, tilt and turn windows, brises soleil and commercial doors.

Soundcraft worked on all elevations of the buildings.

The aluminium SCW+ and SF52 Curtain Walling system were the preferred choices for the project. Manufactured in Soundcraft’s factory in a controlled, clean environment, the curtain wall sections were supplied to site for prompt installation to reduce storage space requirements on site.

The specified doors were from SPW501 from the Aluminium Commercial door range which has proved in service over many years to be robust and reliable, and to provide excel performance necessary to cater for the inevitable high traffic levels of the College.

The aluminium SPW300 tilt/turn windows meet all the current building regulations.

Aesthetically, the aluminium brises soleil play a big part on the appearance of the building, with the added benefit of providing increased UV protection.

Challenges on Site

A major challenge, given the scale of Soundcraft’s work, was to ensure that effective, efficient coordination between the factory, the installation team on site and the main contractor was established and maintained during the project.

A further, tricky challenge was the structural fixing of the vertical bises soleil, which are usually installed horizontally. Once an appropriate method had been identified installation proceeded, resulting in stunning elevational views.

Products

SWC+ and SF52 Curtain walls are a cost effective, zonally drained, pressure equalised, thermally enhanced aluminium system, with slim 50mm sightlines. They are CWCT certified.

The aluminium SPW501 door is capable of being manufactured in single, double and emergency door types, providing open in and open out options. It utilises low thresholds and offers further options such as radiused anti-finger trap stiles (AFT).

SPW300 tilt/turn window is a thermally broken polyamide aluminium window system that achieves good thermal U-values. It has slim sightlines, and can accept a variety of glazing.

The aluminium brises soleil are bespoke and manufactured from 250mm deep box section.

Summary

Soundcraft’s Project Manager, Will Jones said:

“ Trumpington is so far our biggest aluminium project. It required a lot of dedication and time but the result is impressive. It was a very demanding, but satisfying project to work on.”
